About

In Tailor to Your Needs, I’ll be covering historical and costume clothing and how to adapt it to your body and your needs, for beginning sewists, with an emphasis in menswear and unisex clothes.

There’s not a lot of historical menswear available, is there? Not in blogs, not in sewing patterns, and not a lot of variety or quality in ready-made costumes. If you’re not a standard size, you’re out of luck, am I right? Most men are not taught to sew, either. With that in mind, I’ll be starting off with some simple sewing projects geared toward people with little to no sewing experience. In the long run, we’ll work up to more complex and more historical patterns, but I’ll always be giving common sense tips on how to make a project easier.

When I started work on this almost a year ago, I had to pause after my friend suffered a severe stroke. It’s been a difficult journey, but it’s because of this experience that I can include tips on adapting clothing to a variety of needs.

For the purposes of this blog, my pen name is “Taylor.” My photo models right now are my roommates, “Mrs. Short” and “Mr. Tall” (yes, they’re married). Ideally, I’d like a wider variety of body types, so contact me if you’re willing to participate. One of my goals is that people get to see what the finished clothing looks like on a body type like theirs, without shame or judgement.

To sum up:

“historical menswear” “for people with little to no sewing experience” “trans and non-binary friendly” “body-positive” “adaptive clothing” “low budget DIY”
